Some people have defined alcoholism as a disease . The dictionary definition of disease is a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment. So I guess that one could classify alcoholism as a disease. No matter how you classify alcoholism it effects everyone in the family. Most children of alcoholics grow up to lead normal lives and function in society. While on the other hand there is the few that grow up and have difficulties functioning as an adult. Those children that have difficulties as an adult are the ones that I wonder about. Was there something different that could have been done? Did his or her fifth grade teacher notice the signs and chose to do nothing about it? If these children had received help early in life could some of the problems they have as adults been avoided? If this form of abuse is not treated then these children will continue the pattern as adults. If someone don’t intervene on behalf of these children then they will as adults continue the cycle of abuse. They themselves will be the abuser or be abused.
